BritBats 2025

Meet the Team

  • Bronwen Hunter

    Postdoc, University of Sussex

Bronwen is currently investigating how bat's distribution, ecology and interactions with humans affect zoonotic disease transmission risk. Her PhD, also at Sussex, focused on using digital data from online platforms to understand large-scale patterns of bat hunting, trade and consumption. Outside of research, Bronwen enjoys doing yoga, long-distance walking, craft beer and knitting!

  • Katie Allan

    PhD student, University of Sussex

Katie’s PhD project is aiming to use new radiotracking technology to monitor the winter activity patterns of the greater horseshoe bat in the UK. Katie’s previous work on bats includes projects on parasite infection and disease transmission dynamics in Trinidad and Tobago and in the Andes of Peru. In her spare time Katie enjoys rock climbing, skiing, sailing and hill walking.

  • Charlotte Green

    PhD student, University of Sussex

Charlotte's PhD investigates the application of acoustic lures and deterrents in guiding bats, horseshoe species in particular, around anthropogenic threats within the landscape, encouraging bats towards new roosting habitats. Charlotte enjoys live music, travelling, line dancing, knitting.

  • Emily Thrift

    PhD student, University of Sussex

Emily’s PhD is researching plastic pollution in terrestrial mammals in the UK. This research is the first to observe microplastics in voles, mice, shrews and hedgehogs in the UK. Her latest work is investigating how microplastics enter the European hedgehog via supplementary feed and wild prey species. In her spare time she likes to walk her puppy Douglas, practice yoga and cook for family and friends.

  • Eva Nóbrega

    PhD student, University of Lisbon

Eva’s PhD aims to study the effects of artificial light at night (ALAN) on island bat activity with the fieldwork taking place in Portuguese islands. Her main research interests include bioacoustics analysis of island populations such as bat populations in the Macaronesian region. Outside of work, Eva enjoys wildlife photography, hiking, drawing, and reading.
