The 6th British Bat Research Symposium, Friday 5th May 2023, Bristol
The 6th edition of the British Bat Research Symposium was held at the Watershed in Bristol on Friday 5th May, 2023. The event was hosted by the Ecology and Conservation Research Lab, University of the West of England, and the Bat Conservation Research Lab, University of Bath, and was supported by the Company of Biologists. We had eighteen student bat researchers present their work over the course of the day and had invited talks from Professor Kate Jones, Dr Orly Razgour and Dr Stuart Newson.
Prizes for best 15 minute talk went to Cárol Sierra Durán from National Autonomous University of Mexico for her talk titled ‘Bats and Food Security: Contribution of Insectivorous Bats to Pest Control Services in Mexican Rice Fields’. The prize for the best 5 minute flash talk went to Rochelle Kennedy from SRUC & Stirling University with her talk titled ‘Can diversifying agriculture benefit Scotland’s farmland bats?’. The sustainable travel prize went to Santiago Martinez Balvanera. Prizes were kindly donated by Elekon, NHBS and Wildlife Acoustics.
