BritBats 2025

Programme

Programme

We have a full day of exciting talks lined up from student researchers and established academics and professionals working with bats. The full programme is available here.

We have a dedicated conference web app! This can be accessed at https://apps.fliplet.com/brit-bats-brit-bats-2025-chhorklu

There will be a host of prizes available throughout the day, provided by our sponsors The Company of Biologists, The Vincent Wildlife Trust, Ecotype Genetics and NHBS: including during our morning swarming session and a sustainable travel raffle.

There will also be an optional evening social event, held at Open House Pub, Brighton from 6.30pm. This will be free to attend and includes a buffet dinner! We will take a short train journey (<5mins) from the conference venue to the pub, led by BritBats volunteers.

On 23rd January, we are offering a free pre-conference workshop on Acoustic Analysis with Sonobat. This is open to all in-person attendees, although priority will be given to students if we are oversubscribed. Registrations for this workshop is now closed.

Keynote Speakers

  • Professor Fiona Mathews

    University of Sussex

Fiona is a Professor in Environmental Biology at University of Sussex. Her research focuses on monitoring the status of wildlife and researching practical solutions to conservation problems. Recent projects include assessing the population trends of British Mammals, researching the hazards posed to bats by wind turbines; working on the negative (and sometimes positive) effects of roads and street-lighting for wildlife; assessing plastic ingestion by wild animals; initiating a sustainable vanilla production project in Ecuador; working on fish-farming and local anti-poaching agreements in Zambia; and developing the MammalMapper phone-app to improve the monitoring of mammals. She is the founding Chair of Mammal Conservation Europe, former Chair of the UK's Mammal Society, Trustee of the Kasanka Trust (UK), and co-founder and Director of Ecotype Genetics Ltd.

  • Daniel Hargreaves

    The Vincent Wildlife Trust

Daniel Hargreaves is the Bat Programme Manager for the Vincent Wildlife Trust, leading the development and delivery of VWT’s Bat Programme in line with the Trust’s Ten-year Strategy. Daniel rescued his first bat when he was seven years old and has been fascinated by bats ever since. He has been involved with numerous global bat conservation projects, working with a wide range of species and helping to develop conservation initiatives in many countries, including Trinidad, Thailand and Zambia. He was awarded the Pete Guest Award in 2012 for inspiring others and making an outstanding practical contribution to bat conservation. Daniel has also worked with many bat groups in the UK and developed the National Nathusius Pipistrelle Project with BCT to understand the migratory behaviour of this fascinating species.
